If you try to use the other offer as leverage, you'd better be prepared to take the other job if your current company rejects your request for a raise.

You don't have to back the employer into a corner...just tell them you really want to continue working for them, but the money the other company is offering would help your family out bigly. Boss should understand business is business, if he's willing/able to give you a raise to stay then its great. If he tells you he can't and you take the other job, its nothing personal...just give sufficient notice and try to leave on good terms. One day that company may come calling for you again with a better offer.

Hey boss, I've received an offer from another company for $XX. I really enjoy working here but this significant increase in pay is hard to turn down. Is there anything you can do to raise my salary to a comparable level?

It's not that hard, but you have to be prepared to take the other job if they can't match.

You only do this if you're willing to walk, and doesn't sound like that's the case.

If you're concerned about the future company, it is best to not pull this move.

Yeah piece of shite move if you actually like the company you work for. Counter offers rarely turn out well by the way. Most people are gone within 6 months.
