Bakersfield, CA

quote:

Two pedestrians were hit by a trailer that came loose from a pickup Wednesday at Wible Road and White Lane.

Police Sgt. Ryan Kroeker said the trailer came disconnected from the truck, which was northbound on Wible approaching the intersection.

One of the pedestrians died from the impact, while the other suffered moderate injuries.

The trailer continued into the intersection, where it hit a car. That started a chain-reaction crash involving two other vehicles.

There are many things involving a motor vehicle that I expect can kill me in a horrific way.

Being there the moment a trailer decouples is not something I thought of.

I'm lucky to see a trailer with lights, much less safety chains.

Damn, one day you're chillin' in Bako and next thing you know, a trailer smashes into you. Bad luck.

I had a dually pulling a fifth wheel heading opposite direction of me on a 2 lane road. Just as our front bumpers are about to pass each other a boat on a trailer rolled from behind him across my lane. I didn't even have time to hit the brakes before it crossed the whole lane into the ditch on my right. Never touched my truck. If it had happened 1 second later I'd be dead.

Boat trailer was hooked to back of fifth wheel and there were no safety chains on the boat trailer at all. I stayed and berated that a-hole until the deputy got there, then he took over.

I got a no safety chain ticket one time. It was around $300 I believe.

One time a truck in front of me was hauling some thin PVC pipe and it wasn't secured. It fell out and I ran over it.

The PVC shot across the road like a bullet and it went over a woman's hood, hit the ground, and it flew over a gas station.

If it had gone through her driver window (which it missed by maybe a foot), there is no doubt in my mind she would be dead.

I am going to go out on a limb and say the trailer was being pulled by a truck with no insurance and driven by someone who has no identification to be in the country

I consider boat and utility trailers, RVs, 18-wheelers, and church vans to be ultra-hazardous vehicles and avoid driving near them. I'll probably get a ticket one day speeding away from one of them.

frickers are always blowing out tires, breaking loose, having stuff fall off, etc. And the RVs and church vans are often driven by folks with little experience behind the wheel of anything bigger than a F150.

18-wheelers aren't typically a problem. 99% of the time they are better drivers than the little vehicles zooming around them.

But I tend to have the same philosophy with the people hauling boats and trailers. They're just scary to be around.

With them, I worry more about the tires blowing. Every trip on an interstate you see blown tire carcasses. Don't want to be beside them when one goes.

I've known 2 different people who were smashed into the barrier by 18 wheelers while passing on the left. The drivers may be trained but there are a lot on the interstate and when they make a mistake it can be a lot worse for the other vehicle due to their size. Also a ton of these drivers are using stimulants to stay awake.

Damn, I used to live just a few minutes away from where that happened. Tough way to go.
