U.S. test-launches ICBM off California to show ability to 'defend against attacks'
LA Times
An unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base early Wednesday to test the weapon’s reliability to “defend against attacks on the United States and its allies,” the Air Force said.
The Minuteman III missile was fired at 2:10 a.m. from the base northwest of Santa Barbara, according to the Air Force Global Strike Command. The missile, equipped with a single test reentry vehicle, traveled 4,200 miles to a test range near the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

Is it really necessary for us to demonstrate that we can destroy any country we choose at any time we choose? I think everyone already knows that.

A timely reminder never hurts.

8100nm is published range with a throw weight of nearly 2600lbs, which means it can go a lot farther with 3 W87 thermonuclear warheads that weigh less than 600lbs each

So is this going to be like the nuclear war that I saw in "The Leftovers"?
Because that would be pretty entertaining to go out to.

Nuclear warheads do not look like missiles nor do they hit the ground as shown in the Leftovers gif

While I like the move, this is exactly what NK wants. They desperately want to be seen as a world power player. Getting the US to launch a missile in response to their launch boosts their national ego.

Let's just suck the fun out of this thread real quickly.

Pretty cool that German soil connects two atoll islands.

The USAF has been test firing ICBM's from Vandenburg AFB since the sixties. They have even launched from an operational base. I don't think this was a test launch as much as a show for Kim.

When the Cold War was at it's peak, the USA and USSR would have these sorts of move/countermove political plays.
Giving NK the same treatment we gave the USSR establishes their (North Korea's) legitimacy in being a true power.
Want to TRULY send a message to Pyongyang expressing our true strength over them? You can do it by NK seeing their missiles knocked out of the sky immediately after they leave NK airspace.
