Getting a legal education in Louisiana is pretty much only useful in the state

If you're saying this strictly on the basis of Louisiana being on the civil law and not the common law, it's not true.

Honestly I think USNWR likes making news with rankings.

Has absolutely nothing to do with that. Could have easily transferred into a T30 school. Do you even know the metrics they use for the rankings? 40% of the calculation is based on "reputation," which is completely subjective. You mean to tell me some partner out in California can truly rank 300 law schools?

It's a gigantic money grab. They had to do something after their original magazine was a failure

And I completely forgot, I think it was Ucincy that pumped a ton of money into areas US news uses as their metrics, and Ucincy went up like 50 spots within a year.

Yeah, this is dead wrong. While there are certainly individual differences in statutes and codes, the overall scheme in all states is similar, and ConLaw, the UCC and most criminal procedure stuff is the same everywhere.

The general lack of concern about education in this state seeps into the law schools. We constantly jockey with MS for dead last in every educational measure.

A lot of schools have done this. USNWR does huge swings too, both ways. UNC plummeted a few years ago.

Here are ATL's rankings. I'm not sure I agree fully with the methodology, but to me and other lawyers I know, it produces the most "natural" results (meaning it is similar to the list you'd get if you asked lawyers knowledgeable about law schools from around the country to give you a list).

I'm not just talking about what is learned, I'm talking about how the schools are perceived and the ability of one to pass the bar on the first attempt in another state. As well as someone from another state coming here and passing the bar on the first try without a lot of extra additional prep..

Perhaps for the top 30-40 schools. Outside of that, I would love to see the variation in how lawyers who are knowledgeable about law schools rank even the top 100. I bet it's all over the place

I applied and got some money to Bama, but I never really thought about going there. I will say that I and several other people I know who got into but didn't go to Bama all said they do the best "recruitment" by far. It was obvious back then that they were trying to move the needle by putting money in the right places and it is paying off.

I think they only rank the top 50.

Damn, Alabama has really jumped at 22nd. When I went to law school I was choosing between Alabama and Vanderbilt. At the time the choice was between Alabama at 46th and Vanderbilt at 17th. Even though I could have gone to Alabama for about a third of the price, I chose Vanderbilt because I wanted the most options I could get post graduation. Made sense at the time, but if I was choosing now, I think it would be Alabama all the way - 1/2 the price and only 5 spots difference in the rankings now.

Ah, you were referring to something else. Anyways, 40% of the metrics US news is basically the same thing, except they ask lawyers/partners to rank all the law schools
