U.S. District Court Judge Tom Stagg passed away Monday night in Shreveport.
He was one of the best federal judges I ever practiced before - prepared, fair and insistent that you be well prepared for hearings and trial.
He was a WWII veteran with two Purple Hearts (a Bible stopped one of the bullets) and a bronze star.
I remember one of my first hearings before him. The plaintiff's lawyer had filed a brief for a hearing with no case citations. I (unfortunately) followed suit in my response.
He called us back to his chambers, expressed his displeasure at neither party citing any cases, suggested that we rebrief the issue, and politely sent us on our way.
He was always friendly to me. He told me a few years later that he had us rebrief because he wanted to be sure I knew what was expected in his court.

Did the issue involve railroad law?

Basic professional competency?
Hell of a life he lived.

Briefs without relevant case citations occur - received a Second Circuit Court of Appeal opinion in the last few weeks that did not cite any cases because there aren't any (as was the case in Judge Staggs' case).

I was just goofin'.
While my chances for a federal appointment are zero, I hope I don't have too many skeletons in the closet to run for civil district judge one day. It seems immensely entertaining.

Did anyone play badminton with the judge? Great guy.
RIP Judge Stagg.

The first time I stepped into his courtroom, I was scared to death and mortified. The older attorneys in the firm had me all worked up. I was prepared but it was obvious to everyone that I could throw-up at any moment. Judge Stagg, in his always dry manner, got me through the hearing. He called me back to his chambers since my matter was last on the docket. After a round of questions about my background, education, interest (including badminton which I had none). He told me, "Be prepared when you come into any courtroom and the rest will take care of itself. Everyone is young once."
I quit the full time practice and didn't see Judge Stagg for several years. I was attended a function in Shreveport and saw the Judge. I reintroduced myself, but before I could finish, he called me by my first name, told me he was sorry to hear about my father's passing (4 yrs before) and was disappointed that I had left the legal profession. I was stunned, as I can't remember half of what I did yesterday.
A good man and brilliant legal mind. He will be missed.

Judge Stagg was a good neighbor and a good friend.
May he rest in peace.

Sad news, indeed. He was a credit to the bench.
