Has scruffy ever heard of the witch that lived where is now the Squirrel Run golf course. When I was a wee lad there was a small brick house that was burned out on that property. Supposedly a witch lived in it and some teenagers burned it to tie ground with her in it.

Every redneck town had a tale about someone water skiing who fell off in a "nest of water moccasins" and was killed.
When I was a kid I bought a book, "The Dictionary of Misinformation," at a garage sale. It collected many of those tales and debunked them.
I used it to call out gullible church ladies and other idiots for years before the Internet and Snopes came along.
