Unreasonable Expectations

Over the last couple of weeks I have been looking for a truck to replace mine after my Wife totaled it. After looking non stop it seems impossible to find something in the 04-06 range that is even close to the same condition as mine.( one small scratch on tailgate & another on bottom of back door. Other than slight cracking on drivers seat leather, the interior was like the day it left the dealership) People claim to have one in "excellent" condition only to find a ton of scratches, cracked leather, ect. If I do find one that is close they seem to want $4,000-$6,000 above market value. Yesterday I called a place about one I found and told him what I was expecting before I rode up there to look at this truck that was in "great" condition. The salesman told me that I probably have unrealistic expectations.
Do I really have unrealistic expectations? Surely there are still people out there that take care of things.

There are people that take great care of stuff. You just have to realize who they are.

In before "buy a new one".
Have one kid starting college in the fall and one that I'm about to have to buy her first car and another that will need a truck in two years. Also, up until this my next payment on something new was going to be a center console boat next year. I'm really not itching to take on much of a truck payment.

Yea and no. A vehicle especially a truck over 10 years old is going to be worn. Anyone who has one that looks like yours isn't going to sale. They shouldn't use the word "great" but you might be looking for close to perfect not great.

Find an old man out in the country looking to get rid of his vehicle. Chances are its low miles and immaculate shape. Check places where old men advertise like the classifieds in the Sunday paper or by parking it out in front of the local hardware store with a For Sale sign.

You want a 10-12 year old vehicle that is in like new condition? Yes you have unrealistic expectations, it's one thing to take good care of things and it's another to spend money to repair something like a new paint job or ding that you will never recoup the expense.

The unreasonable expectation that you have, if you do have this one, is that you will find it without doing a ton of work. You are looking for a unicorn

Yep. The used truck market is fricked.
It's difficult to find something like that for sale. People who take that good care of a vehicle do it because they intend to keep it.

Sucks you're so far away from Texas. That's where all of the good shite is. LA dealers think every single vehicle on their lots is gold.

May have just found as close as I can get. A private dealer about a half an hour from here just listed an '06 with 103,000 and looks to be very clean. I had the salesman's cell from a few weeks ago and he answered. It has not arrived from out of state but he seems to think it is damn near immaculate. It is priced a hair high and the engine has not been "bullet proofed" but this may be as close as I get without taking on a big payment or settling for something worn out.
*****I've never dealt with this before. After I signed the papers my Father in Law informed me that I could have made State Farm find me a replacement in the same condition as mine.

You are not looking for "great" or even "excellent" - a truck can be in excellent condition if it is mechanically sound but have a few dings and such because it will still run for a long time.
You are looking for "near perfect" and good luck with finding a 10 year old near perfect working vehicle.

For my past two trucks, I've spent maybe 15% of my time searching in Louisiana. The rest goes to looking in Texas. I don't like bothering with dealerships here.
For my current truck, I passed up on an identical (every single thing except color) truck in BR on the way to look at one in Houston. Both were in perfect condition. Lowest price after much haggling in BR was $19k. Price without any haggling in Houston was $14k. Got it for $13.5k after 5 minutes of conversation since I drove/flew from New Orleans.
I flew in on Spirit the next day, they picked me up, handed them the cash, and I left the dealership an hour after getting there. Zero sales tactics to deal with from the dealership.
Eta: use cars.com, auto trader, cargurus, and local CL in your search

You got to find the one owner vehicles. Someone who bought the truck new, took care of it and is looking to trade up.
Or you just keep offering what you think is reasonable for the truck, may not be perfect, but don't get ripped off either.
Also where are you looking? Baton Rouge sucks for used car shopping. So many more cheaper options of the same vehicle if you buy in Houston or Dallas or Atlanta.
Might be worth it checking out a bigger city.
