Let’s also note. Many of these institutions were named during a time when people believed in witches, and also wanted words and “devilish” music banned.

Absolutely. Back then mascots were just mascots. No one ever thought that they were anything except the schools mascots. Also every single person regardless of race got along. I had some very good friends that were black. Back then people were viewed as a person. Not a race

There are so many of these. How in a time where the country was way more Christian than it is now, did they decide to make the mascot of colleges the "Blue Devils, or Demons, or Sun Devils etc?" Just seems weird bc I can't see a group of Christian people saying "yea let's make our mascot the demons." Is there a good explanation for this?

lol... Good Lord, some of y'all need hobbies.

Stories of those fights are what interested Walt Disney in Louisiana. He intended to make tiger fights a major attraction at his new theme park.

Before being called Duke* it was called Trinity and the teams were often called just "The Methodists". Before that it was Brown, then Union, and then Normal... of all monikers.

Typically a mascot was chosen that the opposition would fear. BTW, believe it or not demons and devils were a thing before Jesus.
Apparently back then nobody feared God.

In the case of Wake Forest, many decades ago (I think sometime around WW I or WW II), they beat Duke (then Trinity) in basketball and the local press described them as having played like demons in their win. Apparently, in spite of or because of their religious affiliation, they seem to have playfully evolved that into Demon Deacons.

My high school mascot was the Green Devils.

There was always some church complaining about it.

If you are an adult and don't realize its just a character. Just like how LSU Tigers are not really tigers.. They are not really devils.

What about Miami Hurricanes.. Hurricanes have killed people.. OMG.. Lets take it too literal and be offended or upset over it. come on man

Most mascot/nicknames derived from some innocuous story like that. Generally they stuck because society had more important things to do than search for reasons to feign “outrage”…even the leftists!

Arizona St initially were the Owls. Then they became the Bulldogs. Then, in the 40’s, the track coach allegedly saw a dust devil arise and decided “Sun Devils” might be a good nickname. Evidently the students liked it a pushed for the change. It literally has nothing to do with religion.

LSU’s Tiger nickname came from a group of Louisiana soldiers in the Civil War nicknamed the “Tigers”.

Crimson Tide grew out of a sportswriter describing the Alabama football team as an playing like a “Crimson Tide” because their white uniforms were all stained with red clay during a game
