Houston’s historic Third Ward is one of six wards within the city. The neighborhood is home to the famous Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once spoke on the racial injustices and inequalities that African-Americans suffered at the hands of a prejudiced society. Houstonian Rennette Brown Lucien remembers the area as a “pillar of economics,” but says that, in her 47 years, "I have seen this area come and go — it’s no longer a center for black economics because it is being whitewashed now.”

That which once provided comfort and unity in the traditionally black neighborhood is now deteriorating — some residents say they feel helpless at the hands of the economic forces that have begun swooping in to “improve" the land. These so-called saviors are tearing down the very infrastructure the community was built upon and, in its place, erecting building after building of pricey high-rise housing. Scattered remnants of the neighborhood's history remain, reminders of the its past and present struggles.

quote:

When asked if he feels Third Ward is no longer a place he can call home, Holmes emphatically replies, “Well, hell yeah I do! It was safer when it was just us — we knew each other and we knew who our ‘outsiders’ were. We knew who to trust.”

In fact, this mistrust that Mr. Holmes touched on is so rampant in Third Ward that the Houston Press had to convince those with whom we spoke that we weren't some sort of "official" infringing on their territory, or an undercover agent. They also declined to have their picture taken.

quote:

"We took it for granted, and now we are fighting for what was ours in the first place,” he says.

Quite possibly the greatest thing to ever happen to their property value and they're actively opposed to it.

True story. We have a predominantly black neighborhood here trying to fight a scattered housing placement when everyone has had to deal with it.

Wow.

This is why I laugh at so much of this. There is no end game, rhyme or reason behind any of it.

It's just 100% blame white folks.

So if the city counsel doesn't spend money on black areas primarily, then it's white people's fault.

If white people build nice stuff in a black area to make it better, it's gentrification. Aka white people's fault.

If black folks can't move into white areas to live in better neighborhoods, its discrimination and white peoples fault.

If white people ask any questions why is it ok for black folks to only allow black folks to events and ban white folks, it's white people's fault for injustices and it must be allow to happen or it's racist.

1. I can't tell you how many formerly nice white areas have turned to shite when the area was "blackwashed".

2. These people are making money through their property value going up.

3. Poor black people always complain that Korean or Middle Eastern store owners are "taking money out of the neighborhood". They complain that money isn't spent in the neighborhood and no businesses will stay. Now they are getting an influx of money injected into their neighborhood and they are throwing a fit.

You can't win.

You know what they really want? Their own all-black paradise where everyone has money and everyone is black. They aren't interested integration. They may not call themselves this, but they are black separatists.

He's living in a whole different plane of existence if he thinks that neighborhood was safer before being "whitewashed".

Good, hard working black citizens should be praying the same happens to their neighborhoods.

Go back and read the article again but replace the word "black" with "white" How would that article hold up?
