Back.

I like to pretend he's an early 20th century chauffeur.

I greet the driver at the passenger window and get a feel for it. Only a few drivers I've ever had asked me to sit in the back.

I only really sit in the back when I have a guest. If I have a party, I'll sit in the front while my drunk friends yammer away in the back.

Always in the back.

I hate talking to strangers and really hate when i'm by myself and the dude won't stop trying to make small talk. It's so awkward, and I hate awkward.

he/she is my chauffeur I do not know them nor do I want to get to know them.

I am paying the company they work for to take me from point A to point B at a prenegotiated price that they already agreed to.

the back discourages conversation just drive me. I do not care if it has been a slow day/uber tip outs suck/yada yada yada. Your life problems and chances are I dont want your negative vibe on me.

I actually met an uber driver who was proud of is ride and how he performed. I wished I'd had sat up front to talk with him. And I hate uber.

It depends. I use my judgment on a trip by trip basis. If they seem friendly or if I feel like talking, I'll sit in the front. Also, if it's just a short trip (<10 minutes), I'll probably sit in the front, but will almost certainly sit in the back if I am traveling a long distance (i.e. airport) or there is a lot of traffic.
