Trying to figure out Twitter

I see the potential of how awesome Twitter can be for breaking news and what not. I'm trying to establish a footprint now that I kinda understand what's going on. How do you search interests?

search something you like, then look who said shite concerning it, determine if it's a group/organization/reporter who publishes information about said subject, if so, sub that feed.

My advice would be to follow a lot of people, then if you don't like what they're posting, just unfollow and cut the fat.

It's actually an incredible news and entertainment aggregation site which allows its users to customize exactly what content and content providers it wants to see.
Unfortunately, it's mostly used for attention whoring, getting public figures in trouble, forming pc lynch mobs, and selling pyramid schemes.

There is a search option. You can also set your account to show tweets you are most likely interested in based on your tweets and followers, etc.

I turned on a mute filter for the first time 2 days ago. No tweets with the word 'gun' for the next month.
