On a road trip and the kid asks how do truck drivers work, have a family, what do they earn, etc.

I knew the basics but am embarrassed to say don't know the specifics. So she said ask tigerdroppings. They'll know.

Thanks in advance.

You're thinking of getting a CDL. It's okay, your kids don't have to be a prop.

That's like asking something about "engineers."

Too vague. Depends on what they're driving.

Company drivers earn around 40k a year if they run local. OTR company drivers will be closer to 60K, depending on how far and often they stay out. Owner/Operators can clear 6 figures but need good contacts and solid lanes to keep up revenue. Load types make a difference. A good flatbed guy can do really well, but got to be a hustler. Tanker drivers burn out fast, but can do really well. Lots of health problems for OTR guys..

My heavy haul guys were making really good money. They traveled a lot, but they were taken care of.

OTR can make some money - 40K or so a year but there is a ton of BS to deal with. Plus most truckers end up fat slobs (just look at a truck stop parking lot). My dad is a semi retired driver still runs OTR at 78 in fact is unloading soy oil in Portland today. He's been at it for a damn long time.

I used to go with him when he was an O/O. It used to be a ton of hours and not much pay. It's better hours wise now but the pay sucks.

However you do see a lot of the country if done right. One summer we decided to hit all lower 48 states we got it done in less than a month.

Have your children listen to a few Red Sovine songs and they will learn the pertinent details of truck driving.

So what's your question? Do truck drivers have families?
