Last night I started having issues with my heater wanting to come on no matter what the system was set to. I figured out how to stop it by disconnecting the white wire from behind the thermostat so where my AC would come on again. Obviously, that's just a temporary fix, any ideas why the heater would instantly come on no matter the setting?

Call someone. Could be several things, worst of which could burn your house down.

At least change the battery and see if the problem still exists. Something like that happened to me years ago and it was the battery.

Do you have 2 units? If so switch out the thermostat and see if that fixes it

Try a new thermostat first

Sounds like a t stat. It acts like a light switch (which it sounds like you already know since you disconnected the white wire) and just passes power to whatever it's set too. So if you removed the wire and it stopped it's a t stat problem. But I would try batteries first like someone else already said.
