Somme was the Stalingrad of WWI - ~1 million casualties from July to November, including ~300k dead.

Hell of a way to run an army...

And I'm not sure your numbers are all the British losses - but just the Fourth Army - the Third Army reported about 7,000 casualties (although there is some dispute if they're included in the ~60k/20k of which KIA, or represent additional British losses).

to put some light (or dark) on the subject: 10,000 people died by gas every day at Auschwitz for three months at the end of hitlers regime.

not diminishing what my ancesters did on american soil, or any other thing in this thread.
