Me and my girlfriend will be leaving after finals and driving up to Virginia beach to stay at her aunt and uncles. What's are some things I should plan to do or things that most people don't think about doing?

Do you have a planned stop in D.C., because you know they're about a 4-hour drive apart, one way?

It's not like you just hop over to D.C.

An ugly 4 hour drive at that. Depending on the traffic on 64 and 95 it can easily become a 7 hour nightmare of a drive.

We planned on driving there one night and staying in a hotel and just get up bright and early and see the major sites and drive back to her aunt an uncles house that night.

Just got back two weeks ago. Eat at Catch 31. Do not eat anything with a buffet.

You understand it's going to take about 3 to 4 hours to get from Va Beach to DC, right?

In Virginia Beach, definitely give yourself a few hours to tour the nautical museum and walk around the USS Minnesota. It's really cool.

My favorite museum in DC was the Newseum.

Definitely do the outside memorials if the weather is good - if the weather is sub-par, do as much of the Smithsonian as you can - that's how I would wargame a 1 day trip.

Waterman's is pretty good food in VA beach, it's right on the beach. Traveling to DC is death. you'll die in traffic. There are also laws against cursing in VA beach so that's fun.

At some point south of Fredericksburg the rest of the drive up 95 to DC becomes a parking lot. It's pretty much a daily occurrence at this point.

If you find yourself walking around a museum in Virginia Beach on a weekend, you are doing something wrong in your life.

Richmond itself is not bad outside of I-64 during commute times, which can cause back up onto parts of 95. Most of the traffic starts just north of Richmond. Any wreck north of where I -295 crosses 95 makes the interstate a parking lot for the next several hours since there's no alternate route except those who want to fiddle on US 1.

I live just north of Richmond and drive 95 everyday

If you're into historical sites, you might want to check out Kill Devil Hills/Kitty Hawk, NC. It's an hour or two south of Virginia Beach, I think (it's been a while since I was there). There's a replica of the Wright Flyer and monuments marking the distances of the first four flights that day. I found it very interesting, but I'm really into aviation and history.

Colonial Wiiliamsburg is too far away either.

Trying to drive to DC, see some sites, and drive back in the same day seems overly ambitious to me. You'll be selling yourself short on the experience. Go when you can spend a couple of days.

Agreed. Will leave them exhausted too. Last time I did something similar was for a friend who was visiting who had never been to dc. Drove up early in the day and hopped on the franconi Springfield metro. Basically spent the first half of the day walking to the outdoor memorial sites in the mall and then spent some time in some of the smithsonium before heading the national zoo for a walk through. Definitely was rushed.

He asked if there was anything to see in Va. Beach, and I answered.

You took the time out of your very important to post twice on my comment.

Who's doing something wrong with their life?

I've found that the DC Circulator was the best thing to use for places the metro doesn't really service well. If you can find a quicker way to get from Union Station to Georgetown for 1 dollar, I'd love to hear it.

95 between Fredericksburg and DC is hell of earth. The express lanes have helped a bit, but it's still a mess.

I live in Williamsburg. Jamestown and colonia Williamsburg are nice.

Do the naval boat tour...largest naval base in world. there is a carrier in port right now. They cruise by all the ships and explain details about each ship in part
