The Coddling of the American Mind
"What are we doing to our students if we encourage them to develop extra-thin skin in the years just before they leave the cocoon of adult protection and enter the workforce? Would they not be better prepared to flourish if we taught them to question their own emotional reactions, and to give people the benefit of the doubt?"

"Universities should also officially and strongly discourage trigger warnings. They should endorse the American Association of University Professors’ report on these warnings, which notes, “The presumption that students need to be protected rather than challenged in a classroom is at once infantilizing and anti-intellectual.” Professors should be free to use trigger warnings if they choose to do so, but by explicitly discouraging the practice, universities would help fortify the faculty against student requests for such warnings."

I highly recommend this article. It is a bit lengthy but well worth the read. A real revelation into the long-term effects of this ridiculousness going on around college campuses.

I figured out last night where my generation got this idea for "safe spaces" and codes outlawing hate speech. It all goes back to public schools. In public elementary schools when I was there, they started puting into place these zero tolerance policies on things like alcohol. That quickly grew from actual bottles of alcohol to anything that advertised alcohol or depicted alcohol. Then, they added guns to that list. Then knives and bombs. Then it was fighting. Then it was bullying. Then it was name-calling, then it was cyber-bullying.
The kids in college grew up their whole lives having to adopt their conduct to zero-tolerance codes, where one incorrect word or symbol could get one suspended (I was suspended for fighting in self-defense). Of course they think this is ok and normal, it is how they were raised!
Once again, you can blame our public schools for fostering these youth to believe that there is no freedom of speech! It probably doesn't help that they only get 9 weeks worth of Civics for their entire 13 years of schooling.
Now, the inmates are turning those standards against the wardens in the asylum.
