Trial underway for 2013 Mother's Day beating of white husband and wife in NBR

"You're not going to make it out of here alive."
quote:
A white St. Francisville man testified Tuesday that Donald Ray Dickerson, a black convicted felon, shoved him for no apparent reason at a north Baton Rouge gas station on Mother’s Day 2013 and told him he was in the “wrong neighborhood” before knocking him unconscious while his wife and two young daughters looked on in horror.
quote:
David Ray III testified he and his family had spent a perfect Mother’s Day in Baton Rouge and were on their way back to their St. Francisville home that night when he stopped for gas at Stadium Chevron on Scenic Highway at the foot of Plank Road.
quote:
The lawyer, Shalita Sanders, told jurors that skin color had nothing to do with the May 12, 2013, altercation. “Mr. Dickerson didn’t go to that gas station intending to pick on anybody,” she said. Ray, according to a supplemental police report, told an officer from his hospital bed that his assailant called him a “white boy.” But Sanders said in her opening statement that her client did not target Ray that night and that a comment about the pink shirt Ray was wearing apparently triggered the altercation. “He’s not the malicious person they want you to believe he is,” she said of Dickerson.
quote:
Neither state nor federal authorities lodged hate-crimes charges against Dickerson. East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III has said the Ray family did not wish for such charges to be pursued. Moore also said Dickerson faces a much stiffer sentence under Louisiana’s habitual offender law if he is convicted in the Ray case. With prior convictions for armed robbery, carnal knowledge of a juvenile and purse snatching, Dickerson could be sentenced to life in prison if he’s found guilty of second-degree battery.

i think the whole "BRING HATE CRIME CHARGES RABBLE RABBLE" kind of required getting into his race, but that placement is...odd

Yeah it's not racist or anything, but the writer is clearly trying to accomplish something.

Shalita said - That's enough for me.
She's a liar

Like I said in a previous post about this, I don't understand how this is not a hate crime yet they are going after the white guy that was breaking into a black guys car and then yelled some racial slurs at neighbors. Does not make any sense.

easier to prove the regular felony charge and not risk turning it into a racial issue with the jury
this is almost a slam-dunk on the regular felony, with a habitual offender bill, and a violent crime as his 4th means serious punishment options
why risk it?

So him picking a fight over the color of a shirt and not race is so much better and makes him not malicious? fricking animal.
ETA: He just hates queers, not white people.

Oh stop w/ the "culture" crap. As though all blacks are like this racist POS, anymore than I believe all whites are like that racist POS Roof.
I hope this guy is in jail for the rest of his life. I didn't read the article, but I thought the wife was knocked out too. Regardless it was a vicious attack and that guy shouldn't walk the streets of BR for a long long time.
Anyone see the guy on the news who claimed to be the guy's cousin? He can go join his cousin since he was proclaiming outside the courthouse that his cousin would never do anything like this. He'd better find cousin's doppelganger really fast. If not, plan to visit him in prison.

"Refusing to prosecute as a hate crime so the guy gets more time in jail? Well if that ain't some conniving racism right there!"

They are gonna go after the racial part and all that jazz so that they can bargain and end up with a plea to a lesser felony.
It's all a dog and pony show

Racism in Louisiana? Not surprised.

He deserves to be put away. I'm anti habitual offender law though.
