those look cool but i haven't ever seen those used or really available at nurseries.

Correct....I bought mine at a Nursery here in GA called "Nearly Native Nursery" Nearly Native delivers 3 gallon
Another place to order but are really small
Of course it is better to see one in person.
A review from a guy in Baton Rouge on a gardening site I frequent states:

Try a Japanese Zelkova. Great shade tree used a bunch for shade landscaping.
