The tree stumps were most likely left long so they could come back and pull the root ball. You also need to add a power pack to your standard excavator to run these things as the standard equipment can not power it sufficiently. Had an acre cleared in 5 hours with one of these things before. All that was left was 30 loads of mulch (14 yard truck). The cost was 10k for machine and operator, but the client wanted it done quickly in a tight space.
They do make quite the mess though.
