I travel abroad fairly often. I rarely change money except in the EU and the eurozone. But if you have an ATM card for your account, you can get local currency at any ATM. However, I see you left your wallet behind, so you may not have ATM or credit cards with you.

Hotels will sometimes give you local currency and put it on your room bill. No help if you aren't staying at a hotel.

As for language, depends on where you are. English is commonly spoken in most major major cities, and in most hotels anywhere.

If you are in a city with a US consulate, they may be of some help.

Been there done that. Get hooked in with the traveler network, find a hostel that will let you float a tab for a week (they'll hold your passport), have your stuff sent via DHL to the hostel.

In this situation you wouldn't make it out of the airport you landed in (couldn't pay for a cab, bus, train). Plenty of help to be had there.

Or you can ask for an emergency loan from the US embassy if you have no options

I'd go to the embassy. We look out for our people more abroad than we do at home.

A man walks down the street
It's a street in a strange world
Maybe it's the Third World
Maybe it's his first time around
He doesn't speak the language
He holds no currency
He is a foreign man
He is surrounded by the sound
The sound
Cattle in the marketplace
Scatterlings and orphanages
He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
Spinning in infinity
He says Amen! and Hallelujah!

I'd pick Tahiti, work as a bartender, and get drunk on the beach all the time.
