Toyota, Lexus, Buick, and Chevrolet take top spots in most dependable vehicles list

Ford, Land Rover, Audi, and Chrysler scored well below average in a study of 3 year old vehicles so it may be wise to avoid them.
Hyundai has collapsed as a brand. It used to be top 5, but now it’s below average.
Toyota and Lexus still making great products.
A common theme is that almost all brands have consistent issues with Apple CarPlay integration, so look for more efforts to find alternatives from the big car companies in the future.

The J.D. Power Dependability study looks at data from vehicle owners who reply to surveys. The vehicles for this study are all three-year-old models. This is not a study that examines new car problems. The researchers at J.D. Power noted, “The high number of problems owners encounter indicates a decline in long-term vehicle dependability, with increased levels of problems reported for nearly two-thirds of brands included in the study.”

Many brands have had strong showings over the last few years. GM’s import brand, Buick, is one notable brand that has consistently vied for the premier ranking. However, it was Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia that made the biggest and most impressive gains in rankings. In 2020, Genesis was the highest-ranked brand. In 2022, Kia was ranked highest, and Hyundai third, with Genesis fourth overall. This pushed Toyota and Lexus down below all three of Hyundai’s brands.
The most shocking development for 2024 may be that Hyundai is now ranked below average. Quite a turnaround for a company that was on the podium very recently. Genesis has fallen to well below average. Kia is still above average but now trails Mazda.

Buick and Chevy being remotely high on the list is surprising. Must have paid extra.

Toyota at the top. Chrysler at the bottom. Seems legit to me.

Gotta wonder how much was paid as a bribe with GM.
Unless the chevys were their truck based and Buick their Korean models, this is BS.

Over the past 3 years, I’ve had only one mechanical issue between them both: a water pump on the Jeep.
That’s right at 200k miles driven in that time between the two vehicles. (150k on the Jeep.)

My 2008 Lexus LX 570 is rock solid.
Looking for a new truck, might do Toyota.

For 1/2 a century Buick made a Cadillac at about 1/3 the cost for the working men. Then some fool, in Detroit told them to stop making sedans.

For Ram I wonder if each wheel stud failure counts as 1 or 6 when a wheel flies off going down the road?

That’s a bogus list. How are Chevy and GMC on opposite ends when they’re the same damn truck?

Everything from JD Power should be viewed skeptically.
1) it’s well known that their ratings are for sale to the highest bidder
2) they rely on a lot of self reported issues
3) they do a poor job of ranking issues, meaning Car Play being weird and annoying is ranked similarly to a transmission falling out of the car on the highway.

It would take us 15 years to drive 200k

Damn. Honda has been falling like a rock lately.
Kind of surprised at Tesla.

I was always a Honda person but recently sold both vehicles and bought two used Toyota Corolla and we have been happy with them.

What the hell has happened to Honda lately?

Wife has had 3 Encores, all of which were excellent.
Had an Enclave. A nice but glorified Traverse.

I’m not. Their build quality is meh at best and they do constant updates to fix minor tech glitches. Their cars are mechanically quit reliable but have a lot minor issues that stack up considering how JD computes these lists. I’m also fairly certain Tesla continues to tell JD to get fricked when they ask for data and since they won’t pay the piper they’ll always get poor rankings.
