Town Talk article

quote:

The traffic stop evolved into a nightmare as the woman, who had committed no crimes, spent 25 days in jail and quit her job for fear of traveling through the town.

3rd Circuit Opinion: LINK

cliffs: bogus traffic stop, followed by extortion by City, results in judgment against city. absolute power, corrupts absolutely.

Read it Wednesday and wanted to make a thread (on the Poli Talk), but got distracted with actual work

That happened. In America. In 2015.

I really can't stand driving through there. They are waiting for you the second you get off of 49. Don't go 1 mph over while in Woodworth!

I read the opinion when it came out Wednesday. Arrested that woman at her home w/ her kids there and she ended up having to spend 25 days in jail because she probably didn't have the money to get out.

Had my temperature boiling when reading that . David Godwin, you are a POS!

Not surprising. I imagine 80% of the revenues for that crappy town come from traffic tickets.

Here are the claims that Godwin makes apparently.

quote:

Godwin detained Parker and ran a computer check on her
driver’s license, proof of insurance, and vehicle
registration. Parker explained the vehicle was owned by her live-in boyfriend.
When Godwin ran a check on Parker’s driver’s license, the insurance card, and vehicle registration, he was informed via the State of Louisiana computerized system that Parker’s driver’s license was suspended. When he informed Parker of
this information she explained she had paid the necessary fine for a prior driving offense and she in fact possessed a valid driver’s license which was not under suspension. She offered to show documents to Godwin to prove she had paid the fines and fees for that offense and that her current license was valid. Godwin would not consider the documents and informed Parker he must rely only upon the State computer’s database for information regarding the status of her license. Godwin also informed Parker the registration card she presented was expired. He issued Parker multiple citations including a citation for driving under suspension,
unlawful use of a driver’s license, operating a vehicle not covered by 3 insurance/security, and for not having a current registration. Godwin testified he issued the additional citation for unlawful use of a driver’s license because Parker was driving with a license under suspension. He also explained he issued the citation for driving without insurance/security because it was his understanding that a driver without a valid license could not obtain insurance on a vehicle. This he did despite Parker showing him an insurance card indicating current insurance on the vehicle in the name of its registered owner.

It's the mayor, Dave Butler, who's the real piece of work. He has himself a regular little corrupt fiefdom in Woodworth.

My worst experience w a traffic violation occurred there.

Population of 300 and patrol car was equipped to the teeth w every gadget known, and this was 14 yrs ago.

Said I was 10 mph over the limit when I was in rt lane and a local passed me in the left lane going faster.

Started out fairly routine, and ended w video showing me violently beating the side of my own car. Impounded my vehicle b/c my wife hadn't changed out proof of insurance card to keep it current, even though I was current.

It escalated due to the officer commenting on me paying my bills, and I replied that I pay more in taxes than he made. Lol. Of course he didn't deserve that, but when you put yourself in that position extorting the public, deal with it.

$1500 and 2 days later, I got my vehicle back.

They have no shame in their game. Avoid at all costs.

I know it's easy to blame the cop, but don't completely. The mayor there is the one behind all this, without a shadow of a doubt. Those who have worked there as cops are instructed to do what this one did. I give the cop some of the blame since he could have chose not to do it. But, all of them are instructed to do so by this mayor. He is the one who should be run from office. It's sad though that the people of that town love him because all the $ he steals for them keeps their taxes low, their garbage picked up, and their asses kissed by the mayor.

As another poster said, this is where the DOJ should be looking, not at cops who really enforce the laws and protect society.

As bad as people are hating on Godwin, and deservedly so, it's the mayor that needs to be tarred and feathered then run out of town on a rail.
