I sat down and read the Koran, years ago, keeping post-it sticky tabs handy as I went through it, using them to mark passages that called for violence against others, were demeaning to women, justified inhumane treatment of others, blatantly anti-Semitic, etc.
That used a shitload of post-it sticky tabs.
The Old Testament has plenty of such stuff, too, but nearly all that is mitigated by the New Testament. The Koran doesn't have a New Testament.
Of course, in earlier periods, Christians were similarly violent, e.g. the Crusades, Inquisition, Thirty Years' War, etc. One Pope even promised total absolution for anyone killed while on a crusade. None of which makes the current strain of Islamic violence acceptable, however, but should give caution to anyone who thinks they are acting as "God's hand."
