Yeah I don't know. I'm honestly surprised by how many people say they never learned about Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. It's pretty standard.

Well, certain religions. It is open game on Christianity in the US. Really is appalling.

Christians don't help their cause, but they aren't protected at the levels other religions are.

I saw it too but I also follow /r/trashy and honestly thought that's where it was.

His comment was cringey, but the girl posting a dead girl purposely posing with her arse out and calling her a "down arse chick" made me think I was on the trashy sub.

a pretty popular LC guy died about 2 weeks ago and of course FB filled up

i cringed hard at a few people who were like "i didn't know [name], but lots of my friends are sad about it so i have to imagine he was great. may he rest in peace. [insert scripture]"

Some basic tenants and excerpts from the Quran without going too much into the theology is fine. Getting some education on why people think the way they do and act the way they do is important and important to understanding history. We shouldn't be so afraid and PC that we completely hide from discussion and education.

Christianity would be taught more if it were more historically relevant in American history, like if the Civil War was fought over religion and not slavery.

As far as world history, you learn about the crusades, conquistadors, the pilgrams, Martin Luther, Calvinism, etc. You get a lot about Christianity. Hell, most of the printing press portion of curriculum is about Protestantism.

So we have separation of church and state but we are teaching Islam? Gotcha.

what kind of bull shite high school educations did people get if they didn't learn about major cultures/religions of the world?

I can't imagine the rest of the world seems interesting or important to people who have no interest of leaving a handful of states.

History and culture should be taught in schools. Religious nonsense can stay in churches, temples, mosques, and what ever tax shed cults like HPC and Joel Osteen house their operations.

I don't think you understand what separation of church and state means.

Roman mythology is taught in 3rd grade with Christianity, Islam and Middle Ages in 4th grade. Stuff reads like a history book really

Maybe but I also think many Christians have a persecution complex. A lot have an issue with their theology not being taught as fact. I've never heard anyone complain about the influence of the Catholic Church and schism of the church on western Europe being taught in western civilization classes.

We learned about Islam in 6th grade social studies 15 years ago when we got to the unit in the book about the Middle East and not a single frick was given. It's kind of hard to learn about the culture and history of different parts of the globe without learning about their religion.

We also studied Greek mythology in 5th grade and learned about the gods worshipped by the Aztecs when we were taught about Spain's conquest of the Americas and I've yet to attempt a human sacrifice or have a wild Dyonisus style orgy. Apparently my teacher wasn't worth a damn at indoctrination
