The ER is a horrible place because the customers are horrible. You might be the only person there who is actually going to pay, the only person in legitimate pain and danger, and possibly the last to be seen while a bunch of dregs get their stuffy nose or DTs checked out.

A miserable experience. My last trip was $2,000.

The American healthcare system is a scam… i was working in Asia a couple years ago when i got sick.. thought it might be Covid or whatever, but it wound up being a run of the mill bacterial infection.. i went to a hospital in Thailand, to the ER- this hospital looked like a 5 star hotel.. unbeknownst to me at the time, many countries in Asia have top notch, world class hospitals that rival the best US hospitals, at a fraction of the cost.. I consulted with two doctors, had tests done (fortunately everything was ok) had three scripts prescribed and filled.. oh, and i was seen right away… i had travelers insurance but just paid out of pocket to streamline the process.. my total cost for all of that came to…. $83 US dollars .. not a typo .

There is a reason why medical tourism is a thing in parts of Mexico, Turkey, Asia et al.. I’ll be damned if i go bankrupt or lose my life savings because i got sick .. I’ll repeat it louder for those in the back: The American healthcare system is a SCAM.

Saw so many people that I know had less than $500 in the bank and have no health insurance. I was wondering what happens when the bill comes in. Do they just not pay and their credit tanks?

Hospitals will try to get people on Medicaid if they’re uninsured. At least they will for admissions, I assume they do the same in the ER since they ostensibly want to get paid.

Almost half of all ER visits are Medicaid patients:

For most Medicaid patients, I believe the maximum copay for non-emergent ER visits is capped at a whopping $8.

Those people get sent to the lobby to wait too if things are done correctly.

Fact…

I’ve seen people take an ambulance to the ER for a cold… They don’t give a shite, don’t worry about billing, and don’t plan on paying shite for services. Laws are set and people know how to take advantage of it…

In 1986, Congress enacted the Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA) to ensure public access to emergency services regardless of ability to pay.

I am 2/2 with emergency room visits. I went in to the hospital earlier this year and they took one look at me and rushed me to the back and the doctors and nurses were on me in a flash. All the people who were patiently waiting were probably pissed. The fixed me and sent me home. Oh but that bill…

I also had the misfortune of having pneumonia and a 104 fever in Asia once and the hospital in that “3rd world” nation provided incredibly good medical care.

North Oaks in Hammond is a minimum 6 hour wait. Brought my wife in there years ago for chest pains and difficulty breathing and they said ok have a seat.

10 minutes later we said fk yall and went to St Tammany where she was treated right away.

Been there done that. Over 5 hours at crappy Ochsner O’Neal only to be sent home, told nothing really wrong. Next day, at a smaller, better, ER, found to have pneumonia and near sepsis. Admitted for 2 days. They need to put a stop to these frequent fliers clogging up the ER. There should be a separate triage for Medicaid and the uninsured.

I hate long ER waits. I once thought I broke my ankle and sat out in the waiting room for over three hours.

Probably because of that picture in your signature. The logical and factual absurdity in it calls into question everything about you, even things like taking an elderly family member to the ER.

There have been times I've shown up coughing up blood, but my vitals are stable so I'll wait for hours still lol.

To expedite your experience you have to say you 1) can't breathe, 2) my chest hurts, 3) I can't swallow.

I once sliced an artery in my hand and sat in the er waiting room for 4 hours soaking towel after towel. When a towel was saturated and blood started dripping on the floor I'd go up and they'd take it and give me a new one. It was an unbelievable experience.

The ER

been five times for kidney stones

WOW! After twice you should easily know the symptoms and know the procedure. 99.9% of the time, there is nothing going to be done in the ER for kidney stones.

After 5 times, you should definitely be dealing with your issue thru change in diet.

Maybe because their government spends more money on healthcare for everyone instead of MOST of the money going to lazy pieces of trash who want money for sitting on their asses watching Netflix....Oh, and they expect free healthcare also.
