It would be a stone fire pit with gas run to it and glass beads only...no wood burning or smoke. It will have a custom top built on it so it can be used as a table as well.

Just kicking around ideas.

Why not put fire pit just outside patio?

Sounds like a cool spot to sit around and get wrecked with your friends.

If it was tall enough you may be ok, but it needs to be heat resistant.

I have what you are describing (gas pit with fire glass ) and it puts off a stream of unbelievably hot air. I have a 3 fire ring system where outside diameter is 36 inches across. I'd think anything above it would not do well for long.

Thanks. The reason it will be under the patio is because it will also have the custom top that will be used as the table. This is built in with stone and gas.wife wants circular seating area with modular couches that connect. The pit would be the center and serve as table and firepit.

Will be similar to this but a larger fire pit in the middle

If you didn't turn the fire up all the way (like my kids do) and the fire ring wasn't too big, you'd likely be ok.

As someone above mentioned, they don't radiate heat out wards at all really. Heat just goes up. They do look good though.

Edit- yeah, we're looking at the circular outdoor couches as well. We have an arc hammock in that spot that I'm waiting on it to die...

Thanks. It will be a 24 or 30 inch ring with total width of the pit being 36 or 48 inch. Probably 24 to 30 inch high.

Construction of the whole project starts end of the month just nailing down where the fire pit will go.

The fireglass was very expensive when I put mine in a while back. Don't make your basin too deep or it will cost a fortune to fill. Mine is in a 4 foot cast iron sugar kettle. I put a false bottom in just below the ring and still spent between $400 and $500 on fire glass.

One of the coolest public spots I know of to hang out with family or friends. Pretty chilly in October when I was there so the fire felt good.

Thanks. That is what I heard as well. I was also told not to use lava rocks cause they can explode on you.

What colors do the glass rocks come in? Not a big fan of the bright colors.

That's the vibe we are going for baw. Only under a covered area. That way I don't have put a drain in in when it rains.

They come in every color imaginable. I found a place that was the best price by far. I went with white and sapphire blue sense it was next to pool and contained our water fountain for pool. We went about the same height you are comsidering so people can sit on ledge to be near it or sit in chair and prop feet up.

You are correct- no lava rock outdoor where it will get wet. Supposedly Water gets in pores and makes them explode.

I'll try to find the place I got it from. I know it has the word "wood" in name.

I'm in BR near LSU if you want to come check any of it out.
Also, neighbor has one in table under pergola that we can go see
Edit: found it
This is where I got mine

Thanks. I'm in texas. No pool right now. Putting in 24 X 20 covered patio with outdoor kitchen fire pit and tv. When the kids get bigger we may add a pool.

I'll post a pic of my neighbors setup in a table with chairs around it in a couple of hours.

I edited last post to include link to place I got my fire glass.

You may need a chimney to discharge the exhaust. Check your building code.

On another note, why just propane? Real wood smells amazing when it's cool out.

Smoke is an issue with firepits. I live on a golf course and the wind swirls. You sitting enjoying the fire then 10 seconds later you are choking on smoke. I want heat and a cool looking flame at night. Don't need the smoke.
