Inner city
Single mother
Both parents were blind
Every excuse in the world to fail

Accepted to all eight Ivy League schools and spurned them all for Stanford.

This kid was a university diversity dream. Probably got accepted anywhere and everywhere.

How racist would I have to be to applaud a kid doing well in adverse circumstances just because he is black.

Has society lowered its standards for blacks THAT low now?

I wonder how many of them would have accepted him with the same credentials if his skin was white.

I kid. That's impressive stuff. Especially coming out of Orange Mound.

Kudos to him. Just goes to show simply growing up with obstacles isn't a reason to be a failure in life. More inner city kids should look to this fellow as a role model instead of trayvon martin and freddie gray.

I would applaud anyone who could get into every ivy league school.

Why is choosing Stanford over an Ivy something that should earn applause?

Trust me, they won't. There is more pressure to fail and disrupt class than to get good grades and succeed.

I hope he puts Dell Readus on his resume.

Why do some folks put their kids at a known disadvantage with these "unique" names?

Across all cultures, I think the concept of "coolness" has done a lot to erode society, and "too cool for school" was one of its earliest forms.

Funny thing though, the kids that are in high performing schools have pressure to succeed. I've seen kids go from a poor performing school and do well at his/her new school because the other kids made fun of them for their low grades.
