Why do we even have min/max laws in place if one individual can simply arbitrarily assign whatever sentence he sees fit?

This is a problem with no perfect solution. I think appointments with retention elections seem like the best option. That way, the electorate gets to vote on whether an appointed judge gets to stay in office. If a judge gets voted out, then a new one has to be appointed.

It's a conundrum. You can't get the politics out of it, whether they are elected or appointed. All in all, i think appointing is better though.
