Farish Street was once described as the "Mecca" for black people in Jackson. Living in a community where they were treated as second class citizens, Farish Street gave black people the opportunity to build their own success. After Johnson passed the civil rights act, black people asserted their new found freedoms by going into integrated shops on Capitol Street. Unfortunately, black business suffered, and Farish Street started a downward spiral. Today, there is nothing left but two churches and two restaurants (Peaches and Big Apple Inn, both of which are only open during the week for lunch). If you enjoy history, I would recommend driving down the street (around lunch so that you're not the only one there), stopping to get a Pig Ear Sandwich at Big Apple Inn, and cautiously getting out to read the Mississippi Blues Trail markers. Be aware of the homeless, drug addicts, and prostitutes. If you are visiting Jackson, I would recommend checking out the Fondren area as it is much safer and actually has stores.
