I ride DART in Dallas all the time. Works great. I'm five minutes from a rail station with parking and it's an 18 min ride that drops me off right in front of work. Plenty of white collar workers and the trains are full.
Interesting fact - Dallas has more miles of public rail than any other US city even NYC. It's huge. They need to build express lines though.

You put a commuter rail between Nola and Baton Rouge and people will use it CONSTANTLY. You allow stops in Prairieville, Dutchtown, get a spur from Walker and Denham and allow people to move into and out of the city as an alternative mode of mass transit that's reliable and fairly inexpensive, then it'll get used.
Doubt it.
1. Why would people take a 2hr train ride when they can drive it in an hour?
2. Are they going to drive to all these stations? They sure won't be taking a bus.
3. No one is going to travel to any of those places from New Orleans, except maybe downtown BR, because of the absence of public transit.

I agree with your synopsis of rail travel within BR, but I'd bet less people use the NOLA BR rail then you think.
We like cars and the freedom they bring. Most people don't want to wait for a train or bus. We want to walk out, get in our vehicle, and haul arse.

Another example is the LSU bus system, look at the improvement it saw when it was taken away from CATS and given to a private company to run. It got much better and was actually a decent service.
Any time you make someone turn a profit or lose their job, this is the case. It shows across the board. Civil servants generally have nothing to lose.

I believe thst anytime taxes are being used there should be some kind of study as to how they are best used.
If spending taxes on a light rail better served the community than spending it on widening I10 than fine, go with the light rail; however, I doubt that is the case.
Witness what is happening with CATS. More and money is being shelled out yet ftom what I've read ridership isn't redponding in kind. I suspect a light rail would suffer the same fate, and i would hate to see it tried and then fail just because a few thought if was a good idea.
