The Gonzales Police Department detectives have arrested a man accused of Malfeasance in Office and other charges at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23.

Justin B. Champlin, 45, Geismar, Louisiana is charged with 1 count of Malfeasance in Office, 2 counts of Computer Tampering, and 2 counts of Injuring Public Records, officials said.

Champlin began his employment with the Assessor’s office in 2012, police said.

According to investigators, on Wednesday, April 17, police received a report that an internal audit of the Ascension Parish Assessor indicated possible malfeasance by Champlin, while serving as the Deputy Assessor. Detectives said they began investigating inappropriate acts taken by Champlin while in office.

During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Champlin tampered with the tax assessed values on his personal property, detectives said.

Hard to believe that someone would tamper with records and risk their job over 300 bucks. More likely someone tampered with records to get this guy fired. Sounds like someone wanted revenge for something.

Or this guy is really dumb and thought that either 1) nobody would notice or 2) he miscalculated and thought he would save 30000

Eh, its not as bad as income tax is. You chose to buy a home so that tax is somewhat of a choice. Income tax isnt.

Unless you’re living in a tent by the river, a box in the sidewalk or government housing (including prison) you’re paying property taxes, either directly or baked into rent.

Last year the federal standard deduction for a single filer was $13,850. If you made less than that you had zero federal liability (and unlikely any state liability). Anything over that was taxed at various rates. Earning more than that is a "choice".....not a viable one but it is a choice.

You chose to have a job. I see plenty of people who choose not to.
I usually try not to make eye contact with them.

I'd bet any money someone wanted him gone so they looked for a reason to get rid of him.

I would say that if some outside company went through every parish's assessor's office records they would find some type of manipulated tax records.

Start with the people who own the most land in each parish. If they donate a good bit to the assessors campaign there is a good chance they don't pay even half of what they are supposed to pay.

People should be allowed to own their primary residence tax free

Seriously, tongue in cheek responses not withstanding, every time I start getting ill about paying taxes I ask myself "would you prefer a million $ a year income tax liability or $0 a year, in the current state of affairs". The answer is clearly the $1 million liability. I work my arse off knowing full well that the more I work, the more I earn, and the more I earn the higher my tax liability is going to be....it is a decision. I simply refuse to be a victim. I don't like paying any taxes but I know when I earn that its going to be taxed....and I earn as much as possible.
