Went to a 4-year university, have a white collar job. No regrets. The job is fine, but it just isn't doing it for me. The cubicle life is "meh", and I feel like I haven't really learned a real honest trade. If I were to be laid off for whatever reason, I would be in trouble.

What does the OT think about going back to tech school to do one of the certificate programs to learn a trade? I've been looking at the Welder program. I hear jobs are out there for that trade, and it seems like a good skill to know.

Yes and yes.

I'd do an evening program while still working at what I do.

Good for you. More people need to learn a trade

Too many people wasting time in college getting their communications degree which provides nothing

Vo Tech school???

Go back to college. Get your masters or PhD. If you want to go back to school get a higher degree or another degree in a more appealing area.

I think I theory it's a great idea.

More people need to learn usable skills in post secondary education like welding, medicine, pharmacy, electrics, law, plumbing, etc. rather than getting a social science degree.

You could supplement that with business/finance classes and really create some serious entrepreneurs.

If you enjoy being filthy all the time, sweating your arse off in the summer and freezing your dick off in the winter, then it is for you.

Seriously though, i worked in pipe fab shops and in the field before i went to college. It isn't bad, just didn't want to do that my whole life. Protect your eyes no matter what you do.

Good call. You don't want to be at LSU when the strikes and protests start. LSU Unheard

It's dirty, nasty work but there are plenty of jobs out there for welders. We have a hard time keeping welders around here because they all think they're worth $40/hr... even the ones straight out of school that don't know jack shite.

Do electrical or A/C...

Nothing wrong with doing this type of stuff..... If college isn't for my son, he's learning a trade....

Buddy of mine was a base electrician for Chevron back in the 80's... He retired from Chevron, now he does consulting work for about 200k a year....

Yeah, I'm only 26. Even with the family and bills I have now, I wouldn't need to get near $40/hr for a good while.

It's not a terrible idea. Once you learn the trade you can buy an inexpensive unit and do minor repairs on stuff. I know a few guys who do it for ppl they know and make some really good side cash.

You're going to learn to really appreciate your "white collar cubicle job". Particularly when summer hits.

This dude gets it. If you're going to do it, be the best. Good welders can make good money but great welders are invaluable. frick a cubical.

I know guys that will work different projects, save up some money, and take off part of the year during hunting season and shite. There are good paying project jobs that pop up and then when the work is done they go away... then the next project pops up, etc. Guys that know how to work that system can do pretty well for themselves and manage to get some decent time off in between.

I worked in a pipe yard for 1 summer, 1 summer!!
I went back to LSU and got on the Dean's list. It sounds like a great idea, but its a nasty, hot job.

Great decision. More people should go to trade schools and do that instead of going to 4 year college.

you can make an assload of money, if you are willing to get out and bust arse in pipeline construction or something like that....as the others say, it is hard work in uncomfortable conditions though.
