I’ve always had a Debit card/checkbook from my bank. They use Visa and I was looking to stay along that line. I don’t spend much money and my credit is outstanding. My bank has told me I can get a loan anytime I want and don’t need a pay stub to show either.

Looking for some advice. Just something I can use if I’m short on money at times.

If you are short on money, don't get a credit card

Get one with rewards if you’re gonna get one.

Not really the best way to look at it. You'll always find a reason to justify being short. (Maybe not you, but the general population leans that way).

Credit cards are great for using the rewards system and building your credit. If you're using it as a safety net...there may be other routes you want to walk down first.

Check around and see what you can get the most cashback with. I use Discover exclusively and pay it off every month. I get 1% cashback on every and they run different offers where you can get 5% back on gas, grocery purchases, amazon, etc.

ETA: when I was poor I used it when I was short on cash and that's not the way to use it. You end up trying to pay it off quickly but then you have to use it again because you're short on cash from trying to pay it off.

My wife and I use our American Express cards for everything. The reward dollars just build and build. I pay it off every Friday morning no matter what.

If you are paying your full balance every month, what would the downside to using a credit card be? Considering the rewards/points you earn, what is the possible downside?

We charge everything on our card for the points but I wouldn’t recommend it for when you’re “short on money”

It's dumb to not use a credit card for every purchase if you're financially responsible enough to pay it off every month.

Credit cards have better security and it's much easier to dispute fraud. And every card has some kind of rewards these days.

I trust Frank Abagnale a lot more than Dave Ramsey.

Buy one that has rewards for something you value. Travel, cash back, whatever.

Use it like you use your debit card and pay it off each month. There is no reason to use a debit card.

Or buy now and pay it off every month. Great way to build (or sustain) good credit.

Bad idea. If you're short on cash you want to avoid the credit card altogether. Use it with the money you do have to build credit, and pay it off in full every month.

I have seen too many friends and family do it wrong and it ends up in disaster. Just my two cents.
