Color me shocked.

In all of the circles that I frequent, if the term female is used, it is never used in a manner that is respectful. As someone else mentioned, it is used interchangeably with "bitch" in most instances.

Most people use the word "females" to avoid having to say/type out "women and girls". It's simply a LOT more efficient of a word. It saves breath if you speaking and typing time if you are typing. Duh. Gee whiz. Now, please go find something else to crusade against the male gender with.

Sure, but that accounts for very little of the actual real world usage of the word, at least in my experience, and I'm willing to bet it's the same for you, but go ahead and hang on to that exception.
