They don't leave a generator running, who would put the fire out if it caught on fire. They have battery back up power that monitors all that. They also have a GPS tracking device that is showing them exactly where the platform is.

Noble had one semi that broke loose during Rita and the track showed it to go right over the top of a stationary platform.

If it did, I am not sure it’s designed to float without the moorings. I believe would eventually flip over with certain conditions. Prayers this is all rumor. I hope I am wrong with my thought above

It is (that’s how they get them to location) but not in 100+ mph wind and 30’+ wave action. Would have to be ballasted down pretty deep. It sure what Shell’s process is for their TLPs.

Yeah I have some photos and videos of them brought on location, the conditions made me wonder if it would and all the work/expansions done to MARS over the years.

that part is easy, fire loops and a self extinguishing suppression system

This is fake news. My friend is a shell engineer. Mars / Olympus did not break loose. Also just an FYI the wells are all shut in and won’t spill oil even if the platform detached.

However there was an issue with the drillship that is concerning. I’ve confirmed that is true and have no other details. Rumors are people are hurt. My friend said he does not know why the hell the drillship didn’t leave the area days ago and circle back after the storm.

The latest Facebook update:

***MWN is retracting this post until further information can be gathered, while multiple insider sources have confirmed an issues with one of the Mars rigs the details are too murky to continue this post. MWN will edit this post with the latest information when it is relayed to us.***

Why would a drillship still be there? DP vessels should have evaded.

I did look at vessel finder and it shows it still in location, admittedly that is odd.

Thanks Enfuego - I hope that’s true about Mars. Let’s hope the comment about hurt people on the drill ship isn’t true. Let us know if he gets any more info.

I guess they have automatic oilers and automatic fuel level switches to? Look, I worked out there for over 25 yrs no one leaves anything running when abandoning platforms or rigs. Way too much shite can go wrong. That's why they have battery back up.

Jesus tap dancing Christ it’s a TLP it would not just float around, it would tip over and sink.

No. But he is retired from Shell. Just texted him. He thinks it’s fake news.

No idea. I would’ve thought they left too. Maybe it had issues and couldn’t get underway?

I was about to ask that to the oilfield baws, do they leave a skeleton crew on those super rigs? all rigs? it would make sense and they have those enclosed escape capsules, just wondered about that, some serious hazard duty premium if so I would think

No, a skeleton crew is not left during hurricane evacs. The vast majority have subsea trees (BOPs) which are attached to the facility with risers. They wells are secured and many will have generators running so that you still have comms running until generator runs out. All production is safely shut in. It would be absolutely terrifying to ride out a hurricane on a deep water facility. Since they’re not fixed to the sea floor you can feel the movement even with 6’ seas.

This is what my dad said about it. Though he’s been gone from the Gulf and retired for a number of years now. So not as familiar with the operations anymore.

quote:

It sounds like it was the Olympus floating production system which was located in the Mars field. It was not a tethered platform like the tlp's but rather anchored similar to a ship or drilling rig but supposedly with much more robust anchoring systems. I was gone to Brazil when it was installed and put on line so not that familiar with it. I think it was contract operated but with a shell rep on board, at least back then.

they seem to work just fine on jets, there's an auxiliary power unit in almost all of them, they auto shutdown for things like over temp, low oil pressure/quantity, fire, etc.

Do you know who you’re talking to? He knows
More about the oilfield and everything related to it then anyone else in the world. He does this shite for a living bro.

Don’t believe me? Ask him.
