re: The notion that Mardi Gras parades certain places are not "family friendly"

Some of these parades are getting out of hand with the krewes themselves. Down here in Houma/Thibodaux something is going to happen. Either these krewes are going to be sued, the krewes crack down on extreme drunkenness, or the city is going to do something about it imo.
Especially the night parades in Houma since they ride around all day drinking and partying before they ride. I don't know how they don't fall off the float sometimes. I ride Sunday and will admit that I get pretty lit but we don't have as much time to drink before we ride.

FWIW, people not from New Orleans or Louisiana often have different ideas of what family friendly means. Natives are probably more used to that stuff.

Agreed, the notion that Metairie is somehow more family friendly because there is less drunkeness, more families, or less debauchery I think is off base.
Absolutely. Every year I see more trash at the Metairie parades compared to NOLA. Around lakeside may as well be a combo of Livingston parish and Superfest. Nothing but white trash around there.

I've never been to a parade in Metairie.

I go to Caesar and after I do Zulu and Rex Mardi Gras day just to people watch with some cop friends that work that area. Never a dull moment with all the sleaze there.
I laugh every time someone tells me they go to that area for the family friendly atmosphere.

"The quarter" aint really a mardi gras parade, though.
Go stand on Canal St. and Rampart 3 blocks from Bourbon.

I don't get the Southdowns vs ST debate. Everyone saying southdows is more family friendly...its at night while ST is during the day.
Well, you are more likely to see transvestites walking around or get a plastic titty thrown at you at Spanish Town.

people were telling me not to bring my daughter to the fricking Shreveport parade

Just because Spanish TOwn is at noon doesn't mean it's not a shitshow of awesomeness that's probably not best for children

I used to go to Caeser every year and a few midweek parades when I was younger. I went mardi gras day a few times too.
Like Uptown, there are some spots better than others, and better if you have somewhere to go on the route.

I caught Caesar last weekend by Rouse's towards the end of the route. Oh, there were families alright. It was like all the trailer parks in Louisiana decided to congregate in that area. It reminded me why I hadn't been to a Metairie parade in 10 years.

I've never lived in a place where people were known for getting beat up by throws. After this past incident in Thibodaux I think we are on the verge of my prediction.

It's not that bad. ST will have nmore throws...makes it better for kids.

I was spoiled growing up. My stepfather owned a condo on Foucher about 50' off St Charles and my great aunt lived on St Charles & 2nd Street. Then, after college my wife was one of EJ Ourso's in-home nurses so we had that as an option.
I wish I could take my daughter down there to experience a little more but my mother in law usually takes her to Endymion & Bacchus, but she has a place to park and friends who camp out and save spots all day.

Metairie parades definitely draw a different crowd than when I was a kid. I think the Metry families are more commonly heading into Orleans (which is one reason why Metairie parades are having trouble finding riders), and the Jefferson parade is more people from outlying areas.

Tell me about it. My grandpa always took me and my cousins to Metairie for Mardi Gras Day. It's certainly changed since the early 90s.

Mardi Gras Day on Bonnabel is atrocious. I haven't been to another Metairie parade in years besides MG Day.

yes, because Canal Street in New Orleans is a lot of things, but "family friendly" isn't one of them. Spanish Town in BR isn't very "family friendly" either, neither is the Perkins Road Overpass area during the Annual Wearing of the Green.

S
explain. are the riders out of control drunk, or are they throwing dildos and shite? or are the women flashing tits at the riders?

Agreed. Cleopatra seemed to really step up their game last friday since moving to uptown. Had st aug and karr as their lead bands and both were awesome. Felt like a MG Weekend parade.
Meanwhile went to go watch Caesar the next night at Vets and Sena and their bands were garbage and the white trash around us was sad to look at.
I really do feel bad for how shitty your existence must be as a white trash citizen.
