The Lost Origins of Symbols and Icons

So, I was saving a file this morning and clicked on the "save" icon. It's the normal floppy disc symbol. Everyone knows that one, right? But then I realized that there is an entire generation of kids that know that means save but have no idea why that means save. They've never seen a floppy disc, let alone used one.
So, that got me thinking of the origin of the symbols we commonly use today that have been lost.
I know the Three Balls outside of Pawn Shops goes back to the Medici family crest.
The RX outside of a pharmacy is the latin abbreviation for recipe.
You guys got any other ones?

Barber pole.
Red/white was symbolized from the bloody rags they would hang outside their shop. Barbers used to be dentists and minor surgeons as well.

Never really thought about the floppy icon. Wonder if they'll change it to a cloud in the coming years

I would think the men and women symbols on bathrooms will go by the wayside. They are exclusionary and don't accommodate us genderqueers

Most definitely.

Nazis stole that symbol and ruined it for enternity. There is a plantation just outside of Natchez that has this symbol all over the grounds, dating back to the original construction. Turns out, the symbol was used by Indians (feather, not dot) and other cultures, which the plantation owner was fascinated by.

Oh, nice.
I forgot about the US Army 45th Infantry Division symbol.

How long until the sickle and hammer replaces the stars on the American flag?

Pre-WWII it was also used by the U.S. 45th Infantry

Not until you stop touching yourself at night

You could say that those are everyday anachronisms.
They are symbols that are used out of place in time.
Another one is the phone icon on your smart phone.

Barbers were minor surgeons
They used to do bloodletting. You might say modern medicine has come a long way since then......but health insurers continue the practice in a different form.
