The U.S. government is ringing the death knell for 23 species of birds, fish and other wildlife, including the splendid ivory-billed woodpecker. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will officially declare the "Lord God Bird" extinct Wednesday after years of unconfirmed sightings and fruitless searches in the South.

Gonna be alot more of that if we keep clear cutting forests. Pretty much every Woodpecker species is on the decline.

Anything we can do to give cavity nesters more options we need to do it. If it is nothing more than a few Purple Martin gourds and Bluebird houses. Just keep the damn European Starlings and House Sparrows out of them.

Many times I have been well into the boonies and glimpsed a piliated woodpecker and daydreamed it was an ivorybill.

Seeing the OP is a UGA fan reminded me of a LA/GA/ivorybill connection. A family friend (RIP) John Kilgo wrote an excellent book of fishing and hunting stories called Deep Enough for Ivorybills. It is an excellent example of modern Southern Lit. He got his MA and Ph.D. from Tulane and taught at UGA for over 30 years.

So, now that it is extinct, if you catch a picture of it in your yard, what is the reward.

Pffft...it was never even real.

Everyone knows birds don't really exist, and that what you see are just government drones.

That model must've hit an end of life.

What's the solution? More money, higher taxes, more graft?

I’d be curious to know why the species of mussel are dying out
