The Justice Department is suing Apple for having a monopoly on smartphones

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department on Thursday announced a sweeping antitrust lawsuit against Apple, accusing the tech giant of engineering an illegal monopoly in smartphones that boxes out competitors and stifles innovation.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in New Jersey, alleges that Apple has monopoly power in the smartphone market and uses its control over the iPhone to “engage in a broad, sustained, and illegal course of conduct.”
The lawsuit — which was also filed with 16 state attorneys general — is the latest example of the Justice Department’s approach to aggressive enforcement of federal antitrust law that officials say is aimed at ensuring a fair and competitive market, even as it has lost some significant anticompetition cases.
Apple called the lawsuit “wrong on the facts and the law” and said it “will vigorously defend against it.”

The case is taking direct aim at the digital fortress that Apple Inc., based in Cupertino, California, has assiduously built around the iPhone and other popular products such as the iPad, Mac and Apple Watch to create what is often referred to as a “walled garden” so its meticulously designed hardware and software can seamlessly flourish together while requiring consumers to do little more than turn the devices on.
The strategy has helped make Apple the world’s most prosperous company, with annual revenue of nearly $400 billion and, until recently, a market value of more than $3 trillion. But Apple’s shares have fallen by 7% this year even as most of the stock market has climbed to new highs, resulting in long-time rival Microsoft — a target of a major Justice Department antitrust case a quarter-century ago — to seize the mantle as the world’s most valuable company.

So they're being punished for making a good product and corresponding ecosystem for said products? Do these fricksticks remember cellphones before the advent of the iPhone?

They charge app companies 30% of all in app purchases and deplatform them if they redirect purchases off their system.
I’m sure this is just DOJ collecting taxes and it’ll go back to business as usual as soon as they get their settlement money, but apple is definitely monopolistic with their business practices.

This is probably similar to the EU rules that forced Apple to adopt a universal charger standard, among other things. We'll see how it goes. I think the US is much more pro-business than the EU, so that may not fly here

In the US it's about 60/40 iOS/Android

I will call bullshite on this one. Free market at work.
I can go into any AT&T store and get a Samsung or other dumb phone. Their product is expensive yet people still buy it because it ties into their computers/storage/music/etc.
This is not monopolistic behavior. They built a decent product for their customers.

OT sensational headline is sensational.
if you actually received a 2fps 30pixel video from an apple phone user on your android in the last 15 years you might realize apple is being a fricking bully.

The high standard apple set with the iPhone created the atmosphere that forced competitors like Samsung to also make a great product.

Oh I agree here. It's funny sending apple friends articles talking about why I'm not the problem in a group text thread.

Correct.
The iPhone release completely changed phones and forced Samsung, Google, etc to up their games tremendously.

I would assume this has more to do with certain Apple software being designed to not communicate with other platforms well.
Sure you can send a video to an android user, but it's in 1994 camera quality.

Now do Disney.
They weren't even the highest grossing movie studio last year. What monopoly do they have?

How is making your products work together seamlessly a violation of anti-trust? Are they saying the company simply has too much American market share?
