Seriously? There's a reason all the sprinters on the US Olympic team come from schools like LSU, UF and Florida State. Probably the same reason that like 80% of NFL skill players are from the Southeast, Texas or California.

It has nothing to do with weather and everything to do with the fact those places have the most black people.

Sorry, had to take the shot. TN has been irrelevant for a decade now, and we are going to have to learn how to act again now that we are on the rise.

Not offended. Sometimes it takes a huge loss and a program sinking to new lows for it to wake up those in charge in order to turn the ship around. I think that is happening now at Iowa. The fanbase is pissed.

Track is more than just sprinting. Distance running is part of the sport too.

Treat it the same as if he weren't into reading: make him do it anyway. It's part of a kid's education.

Meh. It has everything to do with the weather. In Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, all of Florida, they have high tech all weather tracks and they compete and train year round.

Miami Gardens Xpress starts training their kids at 4

Imo it's the weather that allows year round training.

Eta see you're talking distance running, and I'm clueless on that so never mind

The best distance runners I used to know all tried to train at altitude.

Regarding cost of travel ball for parents... I used to shoot the action photography for a hockey complex. We would have four or five major tournaments each year. These teams would come in from all over the southeast and east coast.

have any of y'all read outliers? very interesting part about elite hockey teams. seems your birthdate and the amount of practice you get is the way to the pros in hockey.

It was Canadian youth hockey. If I remember right the gist of it was you want to be born in the first months because you play against kids born throughout the calendar year. Being the oldest gave them a developmental advantage over kids born later in the year.

The fact that never gets mentioned. It's the reason the SEC has dominated college football in the post segregation era.

I would love to find a travel ball team for them to play on that had fun and just insured they didn't have to play with jackasses in rec leagues. The kinda league where they let you barbeque in the park and bring some beer. but lets face it, they will never out train their bad genetics. Sorry boys, just the hand you were dealt.

I disagree. My son has played travel baseball for the past three years. His coach is Rus Johnson. Rus is 5'8" and he has said that if he can make it to the big leagues, anyone can. Of course, he lived and breathed baseball from a young age. When his friends in high school were going out on Friday nights, he was going to the batting cages.

He ended up being a great ball player at LSU and a 1st round draft pick by the Astros.

Sorry but you don't make it to the majors at 5"8 without crazy good genes, no matter what a coach tells kids to make them feel better.

He isn't telling them that they all have a shot at the majors. In fact, he tells them that their chances of actually playing in "the show" are a million to one. He wants them to be the best ball players that they can be and lets them know that it takes hard work. One of his sayings is "if you're not doing something every day to make yourself a better ball player, someone else is".

And that is very true but there are guys with crazy genetics doing the same thing which is why saying something like "if I can do it anyone can" . I think competitive sports are great for kids and making them believe they can do anything is something a coach should do but the truth is you need to have crazy genetics and most people need the work ethic to go with it.

2004 LBA pelicans 9u team that are on LSU roster: Austin Bain, Alden Cartwright, Jared Poche.

Plus Corey Merrill Tulane, pitcher
Cole Stapler, Nichols, pitcher
Mac McElveen, Milsaps, basketball

Blake Ballard and Steven Bright had great high school careers at Parkview and Dutchtown. I'm not sure if they played any at the next level.
