The buttered roll (or roll with butter) - a delicacy only known in New York City

It can be hard to explain the appeal of a buttered roll. Unlike the breakfast sandwich or the cruller, the humble buttered roll makes no claims to lusciousness. It’s not really greater than the sum of its parts: a round roll, sliced and slathered with butter. There is no alchemy involved.
Though of course bread and butter are eaten all over, the buttered roll (or roll with butter, as it is known in parts of New Jersey) is a distinctly local phenomenon. Mention its name outside the New York metropolitan area and you would very likely be met with blank incomprehension.
NYT
I've tried to copy this at home in the humble South and just can't seem to get it right. I either cut the roll vertically or put the butter on the top or the bottom. I tried ordering this at a local Starbucks and the the barista had a grand mal seizure as a result - totally lost my appetite.
New Yorkers so fancy I don't know what they'll think of next.

Dinner rolls with butter is an unknown thing outside of NYC? There must be something in that link that better explains this, because that is the dumbest thing I've read today.

Are they talking about the same buttered roll that is served with every meal I've ever been served when attending any event at a hotel?

the mystery to me is why you thought this was interesting enough to share

This is the pic in the article:
Man, I'd have never thought of such an earth shattering combo of deliciousness without that article. Maybe the next article will be the fine culinary geniuses in NYC telling me about sopping up turkey gravy on Thanksgiving with this buttered roll creation.

That looks too extreme for me. NYC is nuts!

Every morning on my way to HS, I'd stop by the local deli and pickup a buttered poppy seed roll and OJ.
7-eleven was another option for a good buttered roll.
NYC delis are a great stop for breakfast sandwiches.
Cooked up a bacon, egg and cheese on a tosted onion roll just this weekend that gave me flashbacks to those times in NY.

That place couldn't touch Lambert's throwed rolls... Only good thing to come out of that place..

see now that's a vertically sliced roll - totally different flavor.

They're talking about buttered kaiser rolls. you can find them pre-buttered and wrapped in plastic wrap in numerous delis and street carts. Very prevalent as a breakfast item. That being said, I never thought of them as a N.E. or NYC thing, and the article reeks of a stupid, fluff space filler item.

Seriously. It's as if people outside NYC are Neanderthals who have no concept or idea of worldly pleasures.

More fake news. Sad!

I think they are referring to the fact buttered rolls are sold at most any cafe, kiosk, store etc. In NYC. You don't see just buttered rolls "togo' sold at convenience stores in the south. They are usually only sold as a side to a larger meal in the south.

Whenever people start to make jokes about people from the south, I like to remind them that "dumb southerners" seem to be the only ones that have figured out that if you add the sugar to your tea while it's still hot, then you don't have to constantly stir your iced tea to get the sugar off the bottom.
