The Battle of Mosul has begun - Peshmerga about 7km away from city

I get the feeling once ISIS is kicked out, this place will be a total dumpster fire between the different rebel groups, the Kurds, and the Iraqi government.

An Iraqi operation to recapture the city of Mosul, the last major stronghold of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in the country, has started.
Artillery began firing on the city early on Monday, in a long-awaited assault from Kurdish peshmerga, Iraqi government and allied forces.
Tanks are now moving towards the city, which has been held by IS since 2014.
The UN has expressed "extreme concern" for the safety of up to 1.5 million people in the area.
The BBC's Orla Guerin, who is with Kurdish forces east of Mosul, says tanks are advancing on the city, throwing up clouds of dust.
As the operation began, one Kurdish general told our correspondent: "If I am killed today I will die happy because I have done something for my people."

The city was one of Iraq's most diverse, comprising ethnic Sunni Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians and Turkmens, as well as a variety of religious minorities.
While members of those minorities largely fled the onslaught by IS, many local Sunni Arabs initially welcomed the militants, angered by the sectarian policies of the previous Shia Arab-led central government.
But after two years of brutal IS rule, opposition has reportedly grown inside Mosul.

The soldiers still fighting are fricking fearless. You know they've seen some shite and it's not even close to over.

I dont give a shite about this part of the world anymore. Close borders. Dont let refugees out. They need to figure their own shite out and stop being a shithole of a region.

I do not believe in US military intervention, but I would like to see the formation of Kurdistan. They are a pretty remarkable people.

I'd say that the Kurds are more than deserving of their own country. Of course, Turkey's heads would explode over the formation of an independent Kurdistan.

To be technical, the Mosul Offensive has been happening for many months now. However, it looks like the big push for the city is happening.

So sad. I know they dropped 10s of thousands of pamphlets in the city to warn civilians to gtfo. But its just sad that so much will be destroyed.

After Mosul, Raqqa will be the next big target.
I know I might be crazy, but if for some reason shite hit the fan in my life here and I could, I would be over there hand and hand with the Kurds.
This build up to this battle has that historic feel to it. On a different scale it feels to me like trying my best to get back to Nola after the storm to do whatever part I could to bring the city back.

This is true. They've been staged at Erbil training Peshmerga for awhile and have only recently made the trek to Mosul. They are definitely dropping bombs though

I wonder...on a scale of 1 to Aleppo, what will Mosul look like when this is all done? ISIS has already done their part with the destruction of historical and cultural sites.
Insane that this city was home to ~2 million people not too long ago.

I'm sure President Obama is pretty distraught at the thought of ISIS being on the verge of losing one of their strong holds.
