Around here, too many vehicles drivers think their headlights don't need to come on until it's completely dark.

No cars of the future where you're from? Automatic lights are a thing now.

Tell me the difference between illegal and stupid and I could probably get half the OT arrested.

Also, don't ever drive over the speed limit if you are concerned about the legalities of driving.

Probably an electrical problem or broken switch. Because Ford.

or GM mid size SUVs with no taillights on.

These are probably absent minded or distracted drivers that think the daytime running lights that are perpetually on serve as headlights. It takes them a while to realize that their entire interior is dark because their headlights aren’t on. Middle aged women are horrible about this.

Also the 4RUnner and Tacoma drivers that forgot they have to turn their headlights on.

Can confirm that Toyota’s branding for these vehicles infers that luxuries like automatic headlights are for sissies and leaves it out of the bulgy, brash 4Runner and FJ Cruiser. In reality they are just being cheap, and have offered this feature on most of their other cars for 20+ years - their marketing tends to aim towards buyers that want an old school truck that feels like a dinosaur. I don’t think the 4Runner even got blind spot detection until last year.

It’s a growing problem with certain types of cheaper cars.

My theory is that it’s a bigger issue with cheaper, neglected older cars because the headlights are faded and yellowed. So the drivers use the brightest settings so they can see down the street more than a few feet.

Then the drivers forget about the leaving the brighters on or they just don’t care.

A surprising number of people don't know they have this so the switch is not set. They see the light from the daytime running lights and think the headlights are on.

I think it's something with the sensor they use, I just don't think it is as sensitive as other brands after it has started to take some UV abuse. It just seems to be the F series though. Mavericks, Rangers, Expeditions, etc all seem to work fine.

Yep, completely clueless.

Yep, though I don't even think they had moved the switch on these so once it became part of the routine it was just part of the routine. I assume the ones who have them off are either not the the primary driver or it is their first Toyota form the FJ, 4runner, Tacoma sector.

I can confirm that the Ford’s sensor covers are frequently broken/faded.

But if it’s a Ford Transit Van, Mercedes Sprinter Van or Chevy Express Van it’s often the opposite. The headlights are always on because there are piles of papers and garbage on the dash at the base of the windshield, covering the light sensor in a sea of perpetual darkness. That applies to some work trucks too.

I always say there's a special place in hell for folks who brake first and THEN use their turn signal.

At least they had something on. I was driving the other night and counted 4 cars without any lights on at all. Pitch black on mountain roads.

well frick them still. when your regular lights are as bright or brighter than most vehicles brights, you need to make sure you have them focused properly away from oncoming traffic.

A lot of times it's on some douched out lifted trucks where they think it's cool to have the brightest lights possible. It's pretty damn stupid to blind all on coming traffic.

Are drivers ed instructors now teaching people to keep their high beams on all the time, camp out in the left lane, tailgate, and never use the turn signal?

It’s a result of not having proper fatherly guidance on how to properly operate a vehicle.

Sounds like you need some new bifocals for your shitty eyes.

I rarely even use brights, unless out on some completely desolate dark roads. Anywhere with lights and regular traffic is not ideal to have super bright lights.

Yep. Country road with advanced darkness and you have to slow down because the guy coming the other way reduces your vision to SEC ref level.
