Wow, you really need a hobby or to get laid if this is bothering you. Really? Stop analyzing life so closely and live.

I actually answer it truthfully.

Most are taken aback.

I got tired of let's pretend.

Fine enough, maybe my assumption was wrong. But it had to start somewhere. And it apparently spread like wildfire and is now handed down through time to us and we do it reflexively through social training.

I will continue to harvest downvotes but stuff like this fascinates me.

People who do that are the worst. It's just a social custom. No need to show everyone what a 'free thinker' you are.

Something like "I have indigestion and a boil on my arse the size of a walnut"?

How do you know it’s only Americans that do this?

It started with human decency. I’m willing to bet the Greeks and Romans did this, as did the Chinese. It started independently in multiple parts of the world. Asking how someone is is no different from saying I care about your feelings. It develops warmth between two people, which helps with diplomacy and the survival of the human race.

I use a scale from wretched to medium to fabulous.

Medium is my usual.

Re the boil, I do use a running joke similar to that which I shorthand.

I wrote a play in which a character's butt hurt.
When it was typed up by someone else the letters were run together and the actress with that line read as typed in the very first reading by the cast. The director and I laughed for a while. Ive used it ever since. It's now shorthand among my loved ones for any ailment.

Most places I usually try to get by with a subtle head nod to politely acknowledge their presence. If it’s someone I know I’ll say good morning or hello and keep moving.

Open ended questions are for people I actually care about. I’m kind of an antisocial jerk though I guess.

He doesn’t. He spouting off his monumental ignorance as fact. Seriously, go to Latin or South America and see if they don’t ask this... or the Middle East, or India, or basically anywhere humans remotely live in harmony.

I like to frick people up by not speaking further until they answer how they're doing...especially satisfying on the phone.

Why be so harsh man? I’m not trying to prove a point or anything.

I haven’t noticed it as consistently with other cultures I have been around.

As a fairly international person, I can assure you other cultures do this. I don’t think the Russians do it, but that’s the only major culture coming to mind.

When I was stationed in Germany we had to take a class about the basics of German culture. Our instructor (a German lady) cautioned us not to ask because people would actually tell you how they were feeling. Never tested it out though so IDK for sure.

I've heard that some people in other cultures find us to be fake because of stuff like this and that we smile at strangers.

It annoys the shite out of me when listening to a sports talk radio show and every caller insists on asking the host how he’s doing.

I’ve never traveled outside of the US but I’ve met people from those countries and they ask that.

The only time this pisses me off is on conference call greetings.

"Hi who joined?"

"It's Bill."

"Hi Bill. How are you?"

"I'm fine thanks. How are you?"

"Oh you know, doing well I guess.. hee hee!"

When it should be:

"Hi, who joined?"

"It's Bill."

"Hi Bill, thanks for joining"
