If Texas was officially a state in Mexico before declaring independence, why were Americans moving to Mexico (Texas) in the first place? Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Mirabeau Lamar, etc. Sure they went to settle Texas, but to leave America for Mexico? I don't get it.

I always got a laugh out of Texas joining the US then about 5 minutes later declaring secession. "Hey the US is pretty nice... whoops, later bitch. Louisiana just left."

The Austin family had a contract to settle lands that were deemed too dangerous by the soft Mexican populace because of Indians and shite

Right. That's my point. 15 years is pretty damn quick to join a country then leave.

Austin's family was run out of SW Va for being pig thieves and now there is a town named after him where he was born

The land was plentiful and the Mexican gov't wanted it settled. Pretty simple really.

Short answer: Comanches. They not only raided Texas, they often sent war parties deep into central Mexico. The Mexican government hoped to use Texas as a buffer against Comanche attacks, and opened the region to colonization by Americans, Germans, and others.

Mexico had to think these English speaking settlers probably wouldn't be cool with being Mexicans. Lol

That's why they had a fella by the name of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna snooping around
