Tell me about pink slips

I'm in my 20s so this situation was already gone before I came into adulthood, but obviously the phrase itself still lives on. How did things go down..like after/while you were being fired when exactly did a pink piece of paper enter in?

My cousin was fired from a job last month and received a "pink slip"
I've never seen one before then.

They used to give them out in grade school as well.

but what is the process? And what is on the pink slip? Is it basically just a termination letter that is on pink paper?

At first, I read the topic as "Tell me about pink slits"

Used to race for them, back in the day.

Did you show up this morning still drunk from Saturday?

haha why do you say that? It's a valid question!

it's the pink carbon copy slip
Posted on 11/17/14 at 1:02 pm to WG_Dawg
is carbon paper already gone?
Posted on 11/17/14 at 1:03 pm to WG_Dawg
It was a "did you get fired this morning" joke. Not a good one but I stuck to the plan

When I got laid off; I got a "pink slip". It's just a carbon copy of the original slip.

Pink slits =/= pink slips

It's paperwork from the old carbon copy days. Three copies: original, employee copy (pink), and company copy (yellow).

Another possible etymology is that many applications (including termination papers) are done in triplicate form, with each copy on a different color of paper, one of which is typically pink.
