Professors are not hired solely to teach. Teachers are.

I don't know any teachers who bitch.

In the la catholic school system you can get fired for shacking up and other stuff like that.

Teaching is a tough job in a lot of areas.

Teaching is about number 356 on my list of tough jobs.

The toughest part is that you get to where you love the kids and you honestly get upset when you see them fail, or their parents don't care, or they struggle emotionally.

It's also the best part when they excel. You feel just as proud as you would of your own kid.

I think What teachers argument really is, is that education is very important to society and should be compensated more for it with higher salaries..

When others whine about all the time they have off, well that does not change the fact that teachers are not important because they are the foundation of our country....also too for example, a person who is in the oil field who works 7/7 or 14/14 have the same.amount of days worked as a teacher does because teachers work about 180/182 work days in a school yr....and oil field guy with those work schedules have half a yr off also....but your don't hear them complaining... you know why? Because those people are taking in 80 plus g a year....why shouldn't teachers make this....I think if you motivate them with money the education system would draw much more motivation and solid people into the profession...a dr or lawyer would never consider teaching because the pay sucks in education compared to other professions....I.e. oil field...js

I agree with you here. However, there has to be some "structural break". Need better teachers to warrant paying them more - Need to pay them more to attract better teachers.

I'd love to be a teacher. I tutored in college/grad school and cared more and put more effort into it than I should have. No way I'd be just a high school teacher right out of college with the pay they get.

Raise the pay for teachers
Raise the standards for teachers
Most teachers come from the bottom 1/3 of college graduates and many go into teaching because it is considered a "safe" job or because they see the summers off. Those are the teachers that do the bitching really, many teachers who go into teaching understand what it is like and WANT to be in the classroom.

Pay teachers 60k a year starting salary
Require teachers to take harder classes in college
Require teachers have a 3.5 GPA or higher
Require teachers to be monitored for the first 3 years

Bring in better teachers, improve the education system.....

Make them pass boards every 5 or so years.

Doctors have to take tests to renew licenses. Do the same with teachers.

I run into my students nearly everywhere I go...seriously. I usually don't mind, though.

Would require a state to keep the same program for 5 years.....

Every 2-4 years teachers are given a new "program" to teach from but teachers are not properly trained on how to actually do the program. So there is a lot of things that come off as confusing for students because districts expect the teachers to follow the program but the teachers have not been given the proper tools to teach the program accurately.

I have several friends that teach and none of them ever bitch. This must be a Louisiana thing because people in Louisiana love to bitch and whine all the fricking time. Seriously.

a lot of professionals are "supposed" to get monitored and it isn't happening. Especially in teaching where they have a lack of "good" teachers in the state now. Teachers get better as they gain experience just like in most jobs and many places refuse to run off a teacher or closely monitor because they hope a teacher gets better.

Why?

It's not like medicine stays constant.

Doctors have new to learn new techniques and systems all throughout their career.

younger ones will, older ones won't much like teaching. Younger teachers are more adapt to change where as many older teachers are stuck in their ways and either refuse to change or can't change.

Why?

Why because the program plays a huge impact on the learned the student does and the teaching a teacher does. Many of the "monitoring" programs are not grade level appropriate. An example is that a re-certification test would be a elementary teacher taking a test on college level material, how does that help the teacher teach K-5 year old kids? Or even a middle school/high school teacher? Teachers are not teaching for their world knowledge (good teachers incorporate it) but many teach the program they are told to teach. So understanding the program and working with the teachers on the program is essential. Changing it every few years and having teaching ill trained hurts the students.

Then there is social media, which has become a dangerous land mine. You have a bad day or a bad customer? No problem; many of you can rant online. If teachers do that, we get pulled into the office for our negativity. We even get chastised if a friend posts an inappropriate post on our page. Even with privacy settings, things get out, so if it is not PG, it doesn’t go on my page. Everyone says we have freedom of speech, but anything can be taken out of context and lead to a dismissal. That is why we cannot live a “normal” life. We are not “normal” people.

Cry me a river. Welcome to professional life.

I can tell you that you definitely were doing it wrong.

Quite probably.

But I did what I thought had to be done. I don't recommend others doing all that I did - especially if they have a young family. I saved all my 'play' time for summer break = 6 week motorcycle camping trip thru the western states.

For me, I couldn't have done it any other way.
