Plan to stay in the volcano region for 3 nights, then 4 nights on the beach. Thinking around Quepos/Manual Antonio for the beach part. Maybe go further south since it gets less touristy the farther south you go it seems.

What are things to avoid and/or overrated? Definite things to do?

Rent a car or taxi it?

Just you know, give me your experiences.

Drive south to Bocas Del Toro, Panama. You'll be impressed.

Why do so many people come here thinking they will impress with their vacationing spots?

Neither. Pack really light (like 25 lbs max a person) and take the shuttle planes there.

It's like a 4 hour drive from Arenal area to Manual Antonio. The roads there are really primitive and so what looks like areas close to each other on the map...take much longer to drive to.

I stayed in both Arenal and Manual Antonio though...loved both areas. The national park at Manual Antonio is cool and has some of the most gorgeous beaches there in the area. We stayed at Costa Verde in Manual Antonio. It's the hotel with the airplane suite. Our room was like only $140 a night and we got a massive room that had an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean from a huge patio area. Monkeys everywhere at that hotel also.

Is Costa Rica impressive? Its pretty fricking cheap from my Googling.

But I trust some of the posters on here over a lot of the random internet blogs when it comes to personal experiences.

Guess that makes me a retard.

Everyone I know who's visited raves about the canopy level zip-lining.

That said, my old boss up in DC bought a house there in like July because his wife is from there.

Take Wheelers through the rain forest up to the top of the mountain and zip line all the way down...they will get your Wheelers back down for you.

Because you can find first hand experience from many people that have recently traveled there that aren't on a random travel site.

Well on our honeymoon we spent 10 days there and went to 3 different areas(Monteverde, Arenal, Manual Antonio). We spent a lot of time in the shuttle buses. It's cheap to take the planes(like $80 a person) and it's 30 minutes versus 4 hours on the road. Wish we would have done that instead of shuttles. We never got a rental car there...I would have been terrified driving those roads(esp the mountain roads going up to Monteverde). Also....rental cars are more expensive than they advertise...they don't always tell you about the mandatory insurance you have to buy until you go pick up your car. And...better get a 4x4 vehicle for some of the roads(esp if you are going during the rainy season..some of the roads aren't even passable). The bridges there are single lane also...so you have to wait for the other side to go and then you go(or reverse depending on the signs posted).
