Synthetic vs Conventional motor oil

I have an old '96 Blazer that my high school son drives. I am having some work done on it and told the guy to change the oil and to use synthetic oil. I have always used conventional blend but recently decided to go with the synthetic oil to maintain the Blazer. It has over 200k miles. The mechanic recommended against this because it could do more harm than good. Said that he has torn down engines that have been using synthetic oil and that parts have residue which is the result of the synthetic oil. I am not a mechanic so I don't know the long term negative effects the synthetic oil may cause but have heard all the positives about using the synthetic oil. Does my mechanic have a point? Should I keep rolling with the conventional oil? Would appreciate any mechanics out there willing to share their opinion.

stick with conventional oil for the blazer.

I've been told by mechanics that you shouldn't change from one to the other. Either stick with conventional or stick with synthetic.

I've torn down an engine that only used traditional oil and it was a mess with residue as well. IMO, you can't beat the durability of synthetic oil; it just holds up better and much cleaner.
But, if you are on the fence, there is always a synthetic blend.

A few years ago I used to independently distribute/sell SWEPCO lubes on the side, mainly to heavy eq businesses. Honestly, you won't find a better lube than synthetic but all synthetics are not created equally. I no longer deal but SWEPCO brands are simply the best on the planet. Having said that, your guy is right... some syns can and will create leaks due to gasket deterioration. Be sure to properly flush before you do a replacement.

200K Miles? I wouldn't make the switch now.

Thanks for all of the feedback on this matter. I certainly don't want to cause a problem by making a drastic change. Just trying to learn what benefits and consequences are. Maybe I'll try the synthetic blend and see how that goes. Is the blend a mixture of Syn and Con?

The problem that most people encounter when switching a high mileage car to synthetics is due to the detergents in the synthetic oil. The conventional oil "gunk" accumulates around the gaskets and other places, often times preventing leaks. The synthetic oil begins to remove this "gunk" and things like oil pan gaskets, main seals, and valve cover gaskets begin leaking oil.
I would stick with conventional dino oil if that is what you have been using.

The reason most don't recommend changing from conventional to synthetic after so many miles is that the synthetic breaks down deposits that may be actually sealing some gaskets. Then it starts leaking. I did this on my Tacoma and the valve cover gasket started leaking. Not a big deal except I didn't catch it till late and had been running with almost no oil in the engine. So I would just keep using what you always have.. you've made it this far
