It likely won't happen in our time. But it is a fact that it is over due to blow. So you never know, no need to give it a second thought. You can't prepare for something like that.

Sunday’s earthquake did not have the right focal mechanism to be directly related to magma moving below the surface either. You would expect if an earthquake was being caused by magma working its way upwards and making room for itself in the crust that any earthquake that were to occur would be one caused by extension. However, the recent M4.7 earthquake had a focal mechanism that suggests it was mainly reverse (compressional) with a smidge of strike-slip (side-by-side) motion — not what you would expect for magma moving upwards leading to an eruption.

Yep, you won't find any dolphins at Yellowstone. They know better.

What if we figured out how to channel the lava, in a controlled fashion and generated some geothermal energy out of it - perhaps we can't stop it from erupting all together, but if the eruption were managed over a decade or so, instead of happening in a week or a month...

Is it crazy to even suggest such a thing? I mean, engineering is a "thing" now, isn't it?

We went to Yellowstone a couple of summers ago. I will tell you that it is surreal to see signs that say, "stay on the boardwalk" in the Midway geyser field because they don't know how thick the crust is there and when it will break through. I guess it just never comes to mind that the middle of the Earth is actually so hot until you see that or a lava flow.

I wonder if you tapped a lava tube if the hole would create a hydraulic hammer and blow the whole thing up. Any mechanical engineers in here?

The magnitude 4.8 earthquake was the biggest recorded quake since February 1980 which is the strongest in 34 years!

I just did this math on a calculator.

It is correct.
